Our Point: When left alone, corruption grows.
Weak King Ahab married a corrupt foreigner, Jezebel. Practiced in royal intrigue and despotic power, she devised perjury and murder. Her corrupting influence placed Ahab in the unfortunate position of Israel’s worst king ever up to his day. in Ahab’s Israel, nice guys finished last, but God was not asleep!
Theme: The Promise
Our Point: God sent the promised Savior
The young king of Judah faced serious threats. Enemies surrounded his country and two of them were preparing to march against him, take his life, and anoint someone else as king. Ahaz saw the danger clearly, but did not understand God’s promise that shines brightly in darkness even today.
Theme: Idolatry
Our Point: Idolatry hurts everyone.
Jeroboam considered the time ripe for reform in Israel, and instituted major “religious reforms.” His mistakes included opening the priesthood to those formerly excluded, and expanding choices for places of worship. He also stubbornly turned out the message from God, whole called him to repentance.
Theme: Pride
Our Point: Sinful pride is a path to destruction.
Solomon’s great wisdom did not keep him from foolish choices that led to idolatry and division for his people. As we will see, poor decisions fueled by pride carry a high price tag, both then and now.
This week’s theme is Brotherly Love
The point: Christians treat one another with brotherly love.
Strong, healthy relationships are very challenging, but also very rewarding. They are only rewarding, however, when the Godly traits of brotherly love are exhibited among those involved. Paul’s relationship with Philemon is a great example.
This week’s theme is “Alive in Christ”
The point: The believer’s message is Christ
While there are many conflicting messages in our world, it is the message of Christ that Paul considered central. We need to focus on Christ, not on the things of this fallen world.
This week’s theme is Supremacy of Christ
The point: Jesus is our King, Creator and Savior
People who are ruled by a king should demonstrate respect, honor, and obedience toward the one in authority. Believers have been made a part of Christ’s kingdom and should demonstrate these same attitudes to Jesus our King.
This week’s theme is Contentment
The point: Contentment results from seeking God and His people.
Contentment, though often misunderstood, is a vital component in the life of a believer.
This week’s theme is Christlikeness
The point: Knowing Christ means growing to be like Him.
As believers grow in Christ, they become more and more like Christ. While this journey toward Christlikeness will not be compleated until we reach heaven, we should be in constant and diligent pursuit of it.
This week’s theme is Humility
The Point: Humility is exalting Christ and honoring others.
Although it is often overlooked and underrated, humility is a key component of our service to Christ. It is also a vital part of healthy relationships, especially those within the church.
